Don't sag, get yourself a Nefertiti chin
Published on October 28, 2009
I'm approaching my 50th birthday, and my facial skin seems to be sagging, especially beneath the jaw. What can I do?
It's gravity that creates jowls. The muscles and platysma skin covering our lower neck and upper chest begin to look like one continuous piece of tissue, with no contrasting sharp jaw line. Fortunately, dermatologists now use botulinum toxin - Botox - to recontour the jaw. Botox is injected to relax the platysmal muscles that pull the face down, letting other muscles do their job of keeping the facial skin up. This new technique is called the "Nefertiti lift", after the legendarily beautiful queen of ancient Egypt, who supposedly had a perfect jaw line. The Nefertiti lift is suitable for people who want a nonsurgical "minilift" for the lower face. To make sure you're a candidate for it, just ask a dermatologist.
