Dove's 'NanoComplex' technology might end the daily damage you do to your hair
It's no wonder we all have bad-hair days, says Unilever haircare expert Peter Bailey. "Every day when we brush, wash, dry or style our hair, we're slowly damaging it," he says. "Over the years this damage accumulates, and we end up with split ends, frizz, fly-away hair and general unmanageability." Split ends, Dr Bailey warns, indicate extreme hair damage. "It's impossible to fix them, but you can halt and reverse the process." Short hair is easier to deal with because the cuticle layer of hair closest to the scalp is healthiest. Longer hair has the cortex layer exposed, so it gets weak and frayed. The Thai climate makes clear what extra moisture in the air can do to hair, Bailey says. "Healthy hair is hydrophobic - it repels water. But if the cuticle is eroded, as is the case with damaged hair, water gets absorbed, making the hair fluffy and harder to manage. "And with the daily damage we inflict on our hair, we open the door to a vicious cycle. Every time we style it, we damage the hair, forcing us to use more intensive treatments and damaging it further." Bailey's 16 years in product research and development have led to the creation of Dove's latest line of haircare products, which boast "NanoComplex" technology. "There are small particles that contain a dry conditioning core, with a wet silicone polymer surrounding it," he says. "The size of NanoComplex particles is smaller than the conditioning particles in other shampoos. This implies a larger surface area, which means more complete coverage and a more comprehensive protective layer of lubricant over the hair." Conditioning is crucial to beautiful hair, keeping it smooth and soft, but for long-term protection, products with smaller NanoComplex particles make haircare worry-free, Bailey says. "There are so many things that women already have to worry about - work, families, friends, relationships and their bodies. It would be nice to be able to eliminate bad-hair days from that list!"
