Is mid-cycle pain normal?

Published on March 26, 2009

I am 38 years old and have lower abdominal and pelvic pain that occurs roughly midway through my menstrual cycle - that is, around a week after my period ends. I asked my doctor and he said that it's normal and is because of ovulation. What can I take to ease the discomfort?

Ovulation may well be the cause mid-cycle pain, though you should consult your doctor next time you are experiencing discomfort so he can conduct an ultrasound and confirm that you are indeed ovulating.

If the pain is caused by ovulation, it's not a serious problem.

As for treatment, I would suggest you start taking the oral contraceptive pill (birth control pill), which will stop you from ovulating.

If you still have the pain while using the pill, then other possible causes should be explored through laparoscopic surgery.
